CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Well, that’s unfortunate,” said the president. “You know about my positions on women’s reproductive rights and the rights of the unborn, but I’m afraid, in this situation, it’s all moot. Steele is in possession of a power that is so intense, it could bring about an apocalypse. In this case, the good of the many really does outweigh the good of the few. And if you aren’t even sure if she is pregnant, then she can’t be that far along. So, I hate to say it, but it doesn’t matter. You have to kill her anyway.”

Wyatt gripped the phone in his office. “Really? That’s your response? You don’t even want to verify if it’s true or not?”

“I don’t think we have that luxury, Mr. Flint,” said the president. “Kill her, no matter what.”

Wyatt sighed. “Well… Madam President, I’m afraid that’s not really possible. I have to know.”

“You really don’t. It’s immaterial.”

“It’s my child,” said Wyatt. “If she’s pregnant, I mean.”

Silence on the other end of the line.

“So, you can’t ask me to end the life of—”

“I thought you and Steele were mortal enemies.”

“We are.”

“And yet… somehow…” The president sighed. “Is this something that I want to understand, Flint?”

Rage sex is a thing with archenemies, isn’t it? Wyatt thought. “I, uh, had to be, er, intimate with Steele to preserve my cover at the time,” he said.

“I see,” said the president. “I take it you’re intent on discovering whether or not Steele is telling the truth, then.”

“I am.”

“And if she is? What then?”

“I don’t know,” said Wyatt.

“May I remind you, Mr. Flint, that Section X is only being allowed to operate in order to eliminate Steele. If you tell me that you refuse your mission—”

“I’m not refusing the mission,” said Wyatt sharply. “But you have to understand my position.”

The president sighed heavily. “Well, for your sake, I hope she’s not pregnant. I’ll allow the inquiry into that for now, but we will have problems if you refuse to kill Steele.”

Wyatt shook his head, struggling to think of a reply.

“Goodbye, Mr. Flint.” The president terminated the phone call.

Wyatt rubbed his temples. The president couldn’t expect him to kill his unborn child.

But then, he couldn’t really think of the baby as a real, live infant, he supposed. It was an abstraction in his head. However, he was finding himself more attached to that abstraction than made him comfortable.

What would it be like to be a father? His own father had been a constant presence in his life, as well as his mother. Wyatt supposed that he’d always thought that someday, he’d have children, but he hadn’t expected it to be for a long time.

He wasn’t ready.

He shut his eyes, and knots of anxiety wrapped around his insides.

“I’m not sure if I have enough money for a big time auction,” said Duke, lounging in Wyatt’s office, feet propped up, head cradled in his hands. “Whatever you guys need, you’re welcome to it, but I don’t know if it’s going to be enough.
